Date: December 12, 2003 Congressman Charles Rangel Endorses Wesley Clark Little Rock - Today, New York Congressman Charles Rangel announced his endorsement of Wes Clark for President. "We need new leadership in Washington, and Wes Clark is the leader we Democrats need," said Rangel. "I've admired Congressman Rangel's career for many years, especially his commitment to civil rights, equal opportunity and economic justice," said Clark. "Charlie is a champion for those Americans whose voice is often not heard in the corridors of power in Washington. I am thrilled he is on board my campaign and I am honored to call him my friend." "Is there any more forceful voice for the less fortunate in the U.S. Congress? Is there anyone with a greater commitment to ending child poverty, increasing access to health care and improving our schools? I don't think so," Clark said. "To my mind, Charlie Rangel is the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. No one's support could make me prouder. " Congressman Rangel is a veteran of the Korean War in which he was seriously wounded. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He graduated from New York University and St. John's University Law School. In 1961, Attorney General Robert Kennedy appointed him Assistant United States Attorney. In 1967, Rangel was elected to the New York State Assembly. In 1970, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 15th District in Harlem and he has been re-elected 17 consecutive times. Congressman Rangel is a founding member and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. |
