Thurgood Marshall, Jr. Named Clark Campaign's Senior Director for Congressional and Public Liaison

Little Rock - Today, General Wesley Clark welcomed Thurgood Marshall, Jr. aboard his campaign for president. Marshall will serve-without salary-as the Senior Director for Congressional and Public Liaison for Clark 04.

"Thurgood is going to be the point person for my campaign's dealings with Congress," Clark said. "The breadth and depth of his experience in this area will be invaluable."

Marshall served in each branch of the Federal Government. He was a member of the White House senior staff during the Clinton administration, holding the position of Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary from 1997 to 2001. In that position, Marshall was the liaison between the President and the agencies of the Executive Branch.

Prior to his appointment as Cabinet Secretary, Marshall was the Director of Legislative Affairs and Deputy Counsel for Vice President Al Gore. He served previously as a counsel with the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, as well as the Governmental Affairs Committee

Marshall returned to private practice after working in the White House. He is currently a partner at Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman. He counsels clients on dealing with Congress, the Executive Branch, and independent regulatory agencies.

A member of the District of Columbia bar, Marshall obtained both his J.D. and his B.A. from University of Virginia. He serves on several boards, including those of the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation and the National Women's Law Center.

Marshall has lined up an all-star Congressional relations team for Clark04, including: Peter Goelz of APCO Worldwide, Steven Palmer of Van Skoyoc Associates, Daniel C. Tate of Capitol Solutions and Tracey Thornton of Farragut Consulting. Each has extensive experience in senior goverment positions and in the private sector.

Thornton and Tate served as senior members of the White House Congressional Affairs team. Palmer served as the Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs and as a committee counsel with the United States Senate. Goelz served with the National Transportation Safety Board and at the White House.
