October 27, 2003 Clark's Statement on Attacks in Baghdad General Wesley Clark's Statement on Today's Attacks in Baghdad "I am deeply saddened by today's tragic attacks in Baghdad, which left 34 dead and more than 200 wounded. Today's carnage spared no one: those hurt and killed were Americans and Iraqis, young and old, men and women, civilian and military. Ultimately, however, all Iraqis suffer, because these acts of devastating violence only prolong the process of rebuilding their shattered society. And all of us suffer when an organization like the International Committee of the Red Cross is attacked, because the Red Cross is charged with monitoring the laws of war, and people around the world rely on their work to moderate the cruelties of combat. Today's attacks demonstrate that we need a strategy for success in Iraq, and we need it now. I call upon the current administration to put forth a plan to stabilize Iraq and bring our allies on board. Each day brings new bloodshed, and we cannot afford to wait any longer for leadership." |
